Volcanoes primarily form due to tectonic activity, with the most common processes being:

- *Subduction Zones*: An oceanic plate moves beneath a continental plate, melting and generating magma that rises to the surface, leading to volcanic eruptions.
- *Divergent Boundaries*: Tectonic plates pull apart, allowing magma to ascend and create new crust, often resulting in underwater volcanoes.
- *Hotspots*: These are regions where magma rises from deep within the mantle, independent of plate boundaries, leading to volcanoes like those in Hawaii.

Most volcanoes are located along the edges of tectonic plates, especially in the Pacific Ring of Fire.
