Three Key Opposition Leaders in Nigeria Consider Merger for 2027 Election

Three prominent opposition leaders in Nigeria are exploring the possibility of forming a merger ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Ibrahim Abdullahi, the National spokesman for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), shared this information during an interview with Channels Television on Monday, September 2.

He mentioned that the candidates from the last elections—PDP’s Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso from the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP)—are willing to set aside their personal interests to create a strong alliance aimed at defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and alleviating the suffering of Nigerians.

Abdullahi reflected on the past, stating that if the party's previous leadership had effectively managed internal conflicts, influential figures like former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike, Kwankwaso, and Obi would still be active members of the PDP. He believes their presence could have changed the outcome of the last election against Bola Tinubu of the APC, arguing that their combined support could have narrowed the vote gap.

When asked if the PDP is trying to reintegrate Obi, Kwankwaso, Wike, and others back into the party, Abdullahi confirmed that discussions are ongoing. He noted that meetings between Peter Obi and Atiku, as well as Obi and Nasir E-Rufai, are taking place. He emphasized that managing the party is challenging but expressed optimism, stating, "Rest assured, there will be light at the end of the tunnel. We have learned our lessons the hard way."
