Prof. Ilyas Usman Appointed Imam of the National Mosque, Abuja

The National Mosque in Abuja has appointed Prof. Ilyas Usman as an Imam, marking a significant milestone in the mosque's leadership. Usman, recognized as the first Professor of Arabic in Igboland, joins the ranks of the existing three Imams at the mosque.

In his new role, Usman will support the two active Imams, Prof. Ibrahim Makari and Prof. Muhammad Kabir, in conducting Juma’ah and daily congregational prayers. The fourth Imam, Sheikh Ahmad Onilewura, from Southwest Nigeria, has been unable to lead prayers due to health issues.

With Usman’s appointment, the National Mosque, which has a capacity of 25,000 and was built in 1984, now has three active Imams alongside the Murshid, Prof. Shehu Ahmad Sai’d Galadanci, who serves as the overall head and spiritual guide.

The South East Muslims Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON) responded to Usman's appointment with congratulations and prayers for his success. In a statement, they highlighted the significance of his role, stating, "This prestigious role is not only a testament to your unwavering dedication and scholarly excellence but also a divine blessing and responsibility to lead the Ummah in worship and service to Allah."

SEMON expressed hope that Usman's leadership would inspire unity and peace within the community, and they acknowledged the inclusiveness of the National Mosque's leadership under the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA). They further noted that this achievement serves to uplift the Igbo Muslim community, showcasing their contributions to Islam and the broader Ummah.
