Peter Obi Clarifies Birthday Greetings to Gowon Amid Uproar from Obidients

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has addressed the backlash he received from some members of the Obidient movement following his congratulatory message to General Yakubu Gowon on his 90th birthday. In his statement, Obi emphasized the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation in Nigeria’s journey toward healing from past conflicts.

Obi acknowledged that his message was met with mixed reactions, with some expressing their sentiments both publicly and privately. He explained that as a leader committed to guiding Nigeria away from its historical shortcomings, including the civil war, it is crucial to demonstrate the heroism of forgiving former adversaries.

Reflecting on the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970), Obi noted that it remains one of the darkest periods in the nation’s history. He pointed out that the survival of figures like Gowon and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo serves a higher purpose in promoting national reconciliation. Obi cited the national burial of Biafra leader Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in 2012 as a testament to Nigeria's commitment to moving forward.

“Responses to acts of evil can either lead to tragedy or hope,” Obi stated, reinforcing his belief that forgiveness is vital for breaking the cycle of anger and resentment. He cited biblical teachings on forgiveness, urging Nigerians to let go of bitterness to foster unity.

While recognizing that his gesture may not resonate with all, especially direct victims of the war, Obi stressed that holding onto anger only perpetuates division. He expressed hope that his actions contribute to a New Nigeria, free from ethnic and religious strife.

“I was a child during the Nigeria/Biafra war, and I don’t want to drag my supporters back into the darkness of our history,” he asserted.
