Ogun State Sets N77,000 Minimum Wage for Workers

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced a new minimum wage of N77,000 for the lowest-paid workers in the state, effective immediately.

This decision came after a meeting between the State Government, led by Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, and representatives from organized labor, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC). The meeting focused on the implementation of the new wage.

Talabi indicated that Governor Abiodun has mandated that no worker in the state should earn less than N77,000 starting in October. He emphasized the Governor's commitment to improving the welfare of the people and encouraged the private sector to follow suit, acknowledging the economic challenges faced by workers across the state.

The SSG also mentioned that the Governor will establish a monitoring team to ensure that private sector employers comply with this new wage policy, promoting fair treatment for all workers.

Comrade Hameed Benco, Chairman of the State NLC, expressed satisfaction with the Governor's decision, noting that it represents the highest minimum wage in Nigeria. He compared it to other states that have set lower minimum wages and highlighted that the new basic salary will not be subject to taxation.

Comrades Akeem Lasisi of the TUC and Isa Olude of the JNC praised the administration for its worker-friendly policies. They also noted that adjustments for pensioners and other related issues will be discussed with relevant stakeholders in due course.

Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, remarked that this generous wage increase reflects the government's responsiveness to the needs of workers and the general public, expressing hope that it will enhance employee morale and commitment to government initiatives.
