NLC President Joe Ajaero Criticizes Petrol Price Hike as Detrimental to New Minimum Wage

Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has described the recent increase in petrol prices as “inimical” to the newly approved minimum wage of N70,000 for workers.

In an interview with Arise Television on Friday, Ajaero announced that the labor union's leadership will convene next week to determine their response to the petrol price hike.

On Wednesday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited raised petrol prices across its retail outlets.

In July, President Bola Tinubu signed the minimum wage bill into law, raising workers’ pay from N30,000 to N70,000. At the time the bill was signed, petrol prices were approximately N700 per litre.

The federal government has yet to implement the new minimum wage for its workers at the national level, and many states have also not started paying the increased amount
