Labour Party Chairman Julius Abure Declares No Automatic Tickets for Peter Obi and Alex Otti

The crisis within the Labour Party is evolving as chairman Julius Abure announced that Peter Obi, the party's 2023 presidential candidate, and Alex Otti, its only current governor, will not receive automatic nominations. Abure criticized a recent meeting led by Otti and Obi in Abia state, labeling it a "betrayal" and a "divisive" attempt to establish new leadership without the approval of the National Executive Council (NEC). This decision follows a stakeholders meeting organized by Otti and Obi, which called for a new convention to elect party leaders, citing Abure's expired tenure and the NEC's lack of recognition by INEC. After a meeting on Monday, the NEC reversed its earlier position, stating that nominations for the 2027 elections will now be open to all candidates.
