Joint Tax Board Approves New Rates for Driver’s Licences and Vehicle Number Plates

The Joint Tax Board (JTB) has approved new fees for national driver’s licences and vehicle number plates, effective November 1, 2024.

These revised rates are intended to improve the quality and security features of these identification documents to meet international standards.

Under the new pricing structure, Nigerians will pay N15,000 for a three-year motor vehicle driver’s licence, while a five-year licence will cost N21,000. Motorcycle and tricycle drivers will also see increases, with a three-year licence priced at N7,000 and a five-year licence at N11,000.

For vehicle number plates, new rates start at N30,000 for standard private and commercial vehicle plates. Fancy number plates will be priced at N400,000, while motorcycle plates will cost N12,000. Dealer vehicle number plates will be issued for N100,000.

The JTB has also revised prices for government-issued number plates, with government fancy vehicle plates now costing N120,000 and standard plates at N80,000. Motorcycle number plates for government vehicles will be set at N50,000 for fancy options and N20,000 for standard.

According to the JTB, these changes will enhance security features, aiding in the identification of drivers and vehicles nationwide.

Olusegun Adesokan, Secretary of the JTB, highlighted the need for public awareness regarding the new rates. In a circular obtained by BusinessDay, Adesokan noted, “The secretariat has requested that the FRSC [Federal Road Safety Corps] inform the JTB of its public engagement and sensitization plans. We believe that effective communication will ensure a smooth implementation of the revised rates
