House of Representatives Passes Independent Candidacy Bill for Second Reading

The House of Representatives has successfully passed the Independent Candidacy Bill for its second reading. Officially titled the ‘Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Bill, 2024,’ the legislation was introduced by Hon. Akin Rotimi.

The proposed bill seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to include provisions for independent candidates, allowing citizens to run for public office without being affiliated with a political party. Hon. Rotimi emphasized the importance of this legislation, stating, “Today, the bill was recommitted to the House Committee on Constitution Review for further comprehensive consideration and legislative action.”

He highlighted that this legislative action is crucial for the ongoing evolution of Nigeria’s democracy, as it recognizes the need for greater inclusivity in the political landscape. The recommittal for the second reading followed a motion moved by Rep. Isah Bello Ambarura (APC, Sokoto), Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, and was seconded by Rep. Akin Rotimi.

This development marks a significant step towards enhancing democratic participation in Nigeria, potentially allowing more diverse candidates to enter the political arena
