Globacom Reaffirms Commitment to Cultural Heritage at 2024 Ofala Festival in Onitsha

Technology company Globacom has reiterated its long-standing dedication to sponsoring the Ofala Festival of Onitsha and other significant cultural events in Nigeria. The announcement was made during the 2024 Ofala Festival held at Ime Obi, Onitsha, Anambra State, where Mr. Tochukwu Okechukwu, the company’s Divisional Head for the South, spoke on the importance of culture in national development.

Mr. Okechukwu highlighted the vital role that cultural festivals play in fostering national identity and uniting people around shared values and traditions. He emphasized that cultural industries, including festivals, tourism, arts, and crafts, could substantially bolster the economy by creating jobs, generating revenue, and promoting local products.

“Culture influences education systems and can inspire creativity and innovation,” he stated. “Moreover, a vibrant culture enhances a nation's soft power, improving its international standing through diplomacy and cultural exchange.”

Addressing the audience, Mr. Okechukwu elaborated on the significance of communication in society, noting that it serves as the lifeblood of connection and collaboration. He affirmed Globacom's commitment to empowering voices through affordable telecom services and digital solutions.

He also acknowledged the rapid evolution of technology, asserting that Globacom aims to harness its potential to benefit society while respecting and enhancing cultural traditions. “We envision a future where innovation complements tradition, strengthening community bonds and fostering collaboration,” he added.

The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, expressed his gratitude to Globacom for its continued support of the festival, which he said has elevated its profile. He revealed that a request had been made to the Ministry of Art, Culture and Creative Economy to help secure the listing of Ofala as a UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The festival, which began with Iru Ofala on Friday and concluded with Azu Ofala on Saturday, marked the 23rd celebration since the monarch’s coronation. The highlight of the event was the Obi's emergence from his annual seclusion, where he performed a traditional dance in full regalia, accompanied by palace chiefs and various age groups in vibrant uniforms paying homage.

Globacom is set to conclude this year's festivities with a Royal Banquet in honor of the monarch at Ime Obi on Wednesday, October 23.
