Former Cross River State Governor Criticizes Presidential Jet Purchase

Donald Duke, the former governor of Cross River State, has expressed strong disapproval of President Bola Tinubu's decision to purchase a new presidential jet, describing it as a "failure in leadership" at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with hunger and economic difficulties. The Presidency, through senior aide Bayo Onanuga, recently confirmed the procurement of a new Airbus A330 to replace the 19-year-old Boeing B737-700 acquired during former President Olusegun Obasanjo's tenure. This announcement has stirred controversy and debate nationwide.

In his remarks, Duke criticized the acquisition, questioning the administration's priorities and highlighting a disconnect between government actions and the harsh economic conditions faced by most Nigerians. Speaking on the Channels TV program Inside Sources on Friday, August 30, he remarked: "Claiming your people are enduring hardship is not commendable; it signifies a leadership failure. As the head of a family, I would want to ensure my family's well-being and make life easier for them."

Duke continued, "If life becomes difficult, it indicates I've failed in my responsibilities. I would urge President Tinubu to view the Nigerian nation as his family. What is beneficial for his family should be for the country as well. Purchasing a new jet or living extravagantly is a failure. You can't indulge in luxury while your children are hungry and you’re attending lavish events."

On the issue of national security, Duke, who served as governor of the South-South state from 1999 to 2007, urged the president to hold security agency leaders accountable. He stated, "Security agency heads must be held accountable for security failures. There needs to be accountability. You can’t simply hold titles such as DPO, commissioner of police, or GOC while crimes occur in your jurisdiction. They must be held responsible."
